Split

Split

Split, with its nearly 200.000 inhabitants, is the second largest city in the Republic of Croatia and the largest city on the eastern Adriatic coast. It is located in central Dalmatia on the Split peninsula. Although the city is surrounded by the sea on three sides, Split is also characterized by its surrounding mountains: Mosor in the northeast, Kozjak in the northwest and the mountain Marjan- one of the main symbols of the city in the western part of the peninsula and close to the old historic center. It is also close to the beautiful islands Brač, Hvar, Šolta and Čiovo, which can be reached from the Split ferry port, the largest in the region.

This important Croatian, Mediterranean cultural center tells its 1700 year old history with its stone walls. In 293 AD, Emperor Diocletian, who is considered to be the first inhabitant and founder of the city, built a luxurious imperial palace on about 30 000 m2 on the peninsula near Salona, which was a large town at that time. After ten years of construction and after his abdication from the imperial throne, he retreated into the palace. Throughout its 1700 years long history, the palace slowly developed into the city that nowadays attracts more and more visitors with a rich tradition, glorious history, the natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Diocletian Palace and the entire historic city center are on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. A stroll through the old town will turn into a journey through time, where you can see remarkable examples of ancient architecture, such as the Peristyle, medieval Romanesque churches and Gothic palaces, Renaissance portals of noble houses, baroque façades up to contemporary architecture that is well incorporated into the rich heritage.

Split is a city where you can enjoy superb gastronomy and wines, visit numerous cultural events such as film and theater performances, exhibitions, excellent museums and concerts, a city that offers fun and entertainment in the form of clubs and bars, street events and festivals such as the Ultra Europe Festival that each year attracts up to 100.000 young people from over 100 countries from around the world.
